How reliable is the BCI cotton standard compared to other popular sustainable cotton standards, like GOTS?
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, which means it can only be used for textiles made with at least 70% certified organic natural fibers.
To compare BCI cotton to organic cotton and better understand the two, we need to look at the differences in inputs and technology.
GMO
One of the first things to note with BCI in relation to organic cotton is that BCI is a mainstream initiative that works with many farmers using genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties.
Their adopted stance of being “technology neutral” means they are unlikely to take a stand against GMO cotton any time soon.
Since GMOs cannot be considered organic, this is a major point of divergence between BCI and GOTS cotton.
Pesticides
By 2024, BCI farmers will gradually eliminate Class 2 pesticides deemed the most dangerous by the WHO.
Growers must also have a plan to phase out pesticides defined as carcinogenic, reprotoxic or mutagenic, but there is no set timetable for doing so.
On the other hand, to carry the GOTS seal, cotton cannot be grown with any synthetic pesticides.
Fertilizers
Organic approved fertilizers are the only ones used for organic or GOTS cotton.
These include manure, compost, rock phosphate, bone meal, chicken litter and vermicompost.
Alternatively, manure is not encouraged by the BCI as a primary fertilization option.
Although the organization recognizes that poor fertilizer management is associated with groundwater pollution and high nitrous oxide emissions, better fertilizer management is only suggested at this stage.
Only on large farms are fertilizer requirements assessed using soil testing and applied using precision farming technologies.
While BCI farmers in Pakistan used 17% less synthetic fertilizer than similar farmers in the region, there is no evidence that this is the case in the other 23 BCI operating countries.

About 8 billion barrels of oil are used each year to produce synthetic materials, such as nylon and polyester, to create textile products. To avoid participating in this overconsumption; we have chosen to design all our board shorts and tote bags from recycled materials. The production of recycled polyester requires half as much energy as that of virgin polyester.
We use two types of material: nylon and recycled polyester. Both provide extreme comfort and superior quality with 4 ways of stretch . A manufacturing system that makes your boardshorts incomparably flexible, which will allow you great freedom of movement.
